Approximately 140 Members of the Muslim community gathered together for a dinner at MeetUp PG in Lanham, MD to support the Prince George’s County Muslim Council. Along with great food from Sweet Tooth Cafe and Cakes, located in Capital Heights, MD, attendees were blessed to hear from three Muslim elected officials from Maryland and New York.
The three speakers were Fazlul Kabir, Mayor of College Park, MD, Mahasin El Amin, Clerk of the Prince George’s County Circuit Court and the keynote speaker was Dr. Yusef Salaam, a member of the New York City Council. Each spoke about the importance becoming civically involved as members of the Muslim community in order to make positive change. Dr. Yusef Salaam recounted his infamous ordeal of being accused of raping the “Central Park Jogger” back in 1989 along with four other Black and Latino youth in New York City. He spoke of the faith and resilience that helped him through this ordeal until they were finally found innocent and won a multi-million dollar suit from NYC. He was once victimized by the system, now he is working to improve the system as an elected official.
Imam Aquil Ingram, who made the financial appeal for the evening, reminded everyone that Allah is The Provider and will return to you what you give, both in this life and in the hereafter. The multiple of which is based upon your sincerity in giving.
PGCMC is grateful to the sponsors of the event and all those who supported.
