Prince George’s County Council Proclamation Presented to the Prince George’s County Muslim Council in Recognition of Ramadan 2009

A Proclamation Whereas, there are an estimated 1.5 billion people of the Muslim faith living around the world, and, it is estimated that between 7-9 million Muslims reside in the United States; and

Whereas, first organized in March 2008, Prince George’s County Muslim Council is a nonprofit grassroots organization whose mission is to promote the involvement of Prince George’s County Muslim residents in the civic and political affairs of their community toward the overall goal of establishing their way of life, and to contribute to the betterment of the society for all residents of Prince George’s County; and

Whereas, the people of the Muslim faith practice Ramadan during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, in which participating Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset as a spiritual practice; and

Whereas, fasting is meant to teach patience, modesty, and spirituality, and Ramadan is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of God and to offer more prayer than usual; and

Whereas, during Ramadan, Muslims ask for forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds; and

Whereas, since sunset on September 21, 2009, the Muslim residents of Prince George’s County have been united with their fellow Muslims worldwide in the observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan, which emphasizes self-sacrifice and service to humanity in remembrance of the Creator; and

Whereas, the Prince George’s County Council expresses its friendship and support for the Prince George’s County Muslim Council and extends sincere well wishes to the Muslims of Prince George’s County for the successful completion of the observance of the month of Ramadan.

Now, Therefore, Be it Proclaimed by the Prince George’s County Council that the members of the Prince George’s County Muslim Council are commended for their dedication and service to all the citizens and residents of Prince George’s County.
